Who are you and what do you do?
I am Milos Gazdic, and I mostly try to do things I like. Sometimes those things bring an income too on side but they always are pleasure to do. I try to avoid those pure compulsory things in life.
What is the source of income and what’s / are the source(s) of pleasure.
I am creative director. It is representing the source of income but at the same time it’s also huge pleasure to do. I am also interested in history of aviation. Sometimes I organize some parties and do some DJing too, but photography is the one that has the place closest to my heart.
I do quite a lot of commercial photography work, hence involvement in Fuse Studio, and it doesn’t exclude passion either. But there are projects where I try to keep things completely separate and tend not to involve professional and commercial work into that sphere, since that would kill its emotional background. I was distracted enough by my commercial work, so I needed something that is only about me. That is why I have created “Hell is Round the Corner”. It's a window for others into my world.
What can we see through this window? What does Milos Gazdic’s world look like?
It is pretty simple. Although I have travelled a lot and I have spent half of my life moving, my weekdays are quite plain: I got up in the morning, go to work, I eat and sleep etc. I am a simple man who does not like complications. I am not the man of words either, so I rather show what I would like to share. If someone reads my blog regularly and checks out my uploads regularly, he can have a pretty clear picture about me.
Your photos are not that simple. Where do you get the inspiration?
I get it mostly from momentary impressions. When I started my blog, first I turned to my friends. You cannot see a professional model on my pictures. I meet people, I chat with them and then I build up the idea, the scenario according to their personality. The girl on the cover, Nevena, for example: I know her for a certain time now, and I am sure that she would be willing to participate in the creation of any “different” or demanding photo. The other inspiration is music. Tricky for example. My wife Jelena proposed the name for the site, after one of his songs, Hell is round the corner. One of our favorite ever. Or Stereo MC’s. And I was lucky enough to be able to meet them and take photos of both of the mentioned musicians. For me their songs are about life. How we are standing in a place that we can define either hell or heaven. I found this definition wide enough for my blog or for my pictures as well. It is not limited; it can put several things under one umbrella at the same time. It can cover everything from fetish to a regular landscape.
Are you the man of opposites?
I do like them, yes. That is exactly what I am trying to say through my series called “Faceless” for example: that we hide our true ourselves all the time. If accidentally we expose something about ourselves, our immediate step will be to hide something else. If you cannot hide you naked body for example, you will surely hide your face. That is not how life should be. We should be more open to possibilities; we should appreciate small things in life. Sorry, I cannot help being positive, I believe it is something that I have inherited from my Grandmother.
What is the important opposite pair?
At this point of my life, it would be sick vs. healthy. Being healthy is the biggest gift, a real value that we were given at birth. Sickness and health can be a modality for the state of mind, or for something created. According to most people a piece of art can be sick as well.
What do you consider to be a good picture? If it is able to transfer the above mentioned messages?
That is an aspect naturally but the most important thing would be the (technical) knowledge and skill of the photographer. You have to be professional in something to be able to create something non-professional. The second step would be the visual value. What kind of feelings does a picture evoke in you when you have a look at it? Is it beautiful? Is it inspirational? Is it shocking? At this level a picture can be beautiful even if there is nothing else on it just a good model. Finally, the third step would be the thing that you were asking about, the ability to transfer some kind of message. If you think about it, photography already has a very realistic message. It is not the same if you are looking at a painted picture about nudity or execution, or if you are looking at a photograph about the same topics. In the case of the latter one, you are fully aware of the fact that the man who took that photo was the witness of those happenings. You cannot neglect the fact either, that in the first case, an artist does his work for himself. He is his own main judge. Sometimes I get annoyed for a moment by someone who is criticising my work, or who is telling me what to do, or how to do, but then I realise I need criticism to get even better. And we have to admit that without audience there would be no art... |
